Kleinburg Holiday Food Drive

Saturday November 26 - 10 am to  12 noon
Place your non-perishable food items in a bag on your doorstep before 10 am
This year’s 9th Annual Kleinburg Community Food Drive for Vaughan Food Bank will take place on Saturday November 26th from 10 am - 12 noon at the Kline House (NW corner Nashville/Islington).  Last year we collected over 8000 pounds of food with over 75 committed volunteers, including over 50 youth.   We are hoping for even greater community participation this year!  Thank you to our caring community for your kind support.

This year, Take-5 will be organizing the Food Drive.  For over 45 years, a Take-5 group of Kleinburg moms have met on Wed mornings to share a cup of coffee and have a chat with others from the area.  This wonderful group was looking for a way to give back to the community.  What better way than the Food Drive.  Please come out and help this group collect donations for Vaughan Food Bank.
To volunteer, contact Sarah Dimitriu - sarahdimitriu@gmail.com or Franca Chari -  fchari@rogers.com.  Drivers and “collectors” are needed.

Young people earn community service hours for helping with this event.
Please place your non-perishable food items  in a bag, out on your doorstep before 10 am on Saturday November 26 for pick up, or drop off your donations to Kline House between Sunday November 20 (the day of the Tree Lighting) and Wednesday November 30.  Items most required:
  • Toiletry items such as hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, razors, hair shampoos, paper hand towels, hair creams, cosmetics
  • Hot & cold cereals, biscuits, crackers, cookies, cake mixes, pancake mixes, Kraft dinners and all types of pasta
  • Canned food items such as soups, fruit, vegetables, juices, pasta sauces
  • Glass items such as pickles, sauces, jams, relishes, salad dressings
  • Baby diapers, sizes 3 to 6
Please note:  Baby food is NOT a priority this year

If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can do so online at vaughanfoodbank.ca.

Development Corner

Proposed Stegman's Mill Development

The proposed development on Stegman’s Mill is coming closer to being approved by the City.  The developer took all the comments we provided at the beginning of this year and came back to the City with a slightly modified proposal.  KARA’s position continues to be as follows:
The village of Kleinburg offers a unique heritage and natural experience. Further, the Kleinburg Core contributes to the strength of the city at large, by providing a particular contrast to the many different areas that make up Vaughan. It is so clear, that the planners, stakeholders, previous council’s, and community have adopted these principles in so many of our official planning documents. Considering all the manners in which this proposal continues to contravene our official planning, and public meetings regarding this file, an approval would serve as a discourtesy to the merit of such documents, the process, and an oversight to the credence invested by the residents into the value of such. Therefore, upon careful consideration, KARA maintains that the Vaughan Official Plan, in congruence with the Kleinburg-Nashville Heritage District Study and Plan is the representing planning authority from the city of Vaughan, and that this proposal be revised with genuine interest to achieve that intent. Otherwise, the endorsement of this plan would render our Vaughan Official Plan and Heritage District Study as irrelevant and misleading information.
The risk is that if this kind of development is approved on Stegman’s Mill in an area that is zoned residential, then it would set a worrying precedent and reference point to any new proposals to Napier or in any of our subdivisions for that matter. Once the precedent is set, it defeats the objective of our Heritage Conservation District Plan. We need to hold the City to their plans. Our Official Plan and Heritage Conservation District Plan have cost us millions in taxes and should be complied to by new development to protect our community. There is a meeting coming up with respect to the Stegman’s Mill development where community support will influence the city to sustain our Heritage District Conservation Plan.  On Wednesday November 16, there is a Heritage Vaughan Meeting where KARA will make a deposition on this development.  Community support would be invaluable.  If you can attend, the meeting is:

Wed Nov 16 at 7:00 pm
in Committee Rooms 242/243, 2nd Floor,
City Hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive West

Annual Tree Lighting

Sunday Nov 20, 5:00 pm - Kline House
Come on out to Kleinburg’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Sunday November 20 (note:  it is Sunday right after the Santa Claus Parade this year, not Friday).  Festivities in the village start at 2 pm with the tree in front of Kline House (NW corner of Islington and Nashville) being lit at 5 pm.  In addition, there will be 2 more trees lit - in front of the McMichael Gallery and in front of the former United Church.

Come out and enjoy hot chocolate, apple cider, popcorn, candy floss, candy canes and lots of other holiday goodies.  There will be wagon rides along Islington Ave., and Christmas Carols sung by the Father Bressani Singers.  At the Post Office, children can send their letters to Santa.  And, Santa will make a special visit to Kleinburg to take pictures with the children.  It is a great way to share some holiday cheer with your neighbours!

This year’s event is hosted by Trees for Kleinburg with support from the Kleinburg BIA.  Donations can be made through the purchase of a decoration for the Kline House tree.  All proceeds go to support Sick Kids Hospital and Trees for Kleinburg.  Hope to see you there!  Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable item for Vaughan Food Bank (drop off at Kline House).

Quilt Winner

Congratulations to Marlena Vermeer-Kortiko of Tottenham ON, formerly of Nashville and daughter of the 1991 Festival Queen (Antje Vermeer), the winner of the 2016 Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival's Raffle Quilt and dust cover – the Binder Twine Celebrates 50 Sampler.   Marlena, a perennial attender of the Binder Twine Festival was ecstatic to win.  A very excited and grateful Marlena exclaimed, "This is such a great Binder Twine Festival treasure, thank you.”  The money raised will go to Kleinburg Public School Library - Visiting Authors Program.

Quilt Square Contest Results

Thank you to everyone who stitched a quilt square for this year's contest and to all the festival goers visiting the quilt booth for taking the time to vote for their favourite quilt square and select the winners for the Viewer's Choice Awards.  There were close to 30 red and white quilt squares to choose from, many with Canada's Sesquicentennial themes.  The results are; 1st - Lone Pine, Heidi Horsch, 2nd - BT Mouse Celebrates Canada's 150th, Norma Curtis, 3rd - Cardinal, Joan Love and 4th - Circle of Friends, Marina Wright.  A special thank you to all the merchants for their fabulous prize donations for all the quilt square winners.

Handy Hanna steals the show!

Binder Twine Queen 2016

Katrina Ruzicka (aka Handy Hanna) was all tooled up to compete in the Binder Twine Queen contest this year. She was comfortable with all the equipment to hammer nails, saw logs and toss pancakes. When the handle came off the frying pan she tried to mend it instantly!  It paid off as she won $1000 and was crowned Queen for 2016!
Placing second, winning $500, was Rachel James (Misfit Molly); third was Gina Hartl  (Fanny from Kleinburg) winning $250 and fourth was Darcy Legg (Dancing Daisy) winning $125.  They all did a wonderful job decorating a member of the audience as a scarecrow this year. And we managed to locate a cow who was comfortable being hand milked.  Congratulations to all our contestants. They put on a very entertaining show.
