Two Important Development Issues you have the opportunity on which to comment:

1.  Stegman's Mill Development Proposal

The revision of the proposal for 357, 365 and 375 Stegman’s Mill Road has been submitted to the City.  It was supposed to address the concerns expressed by the community at the Public Hearing in February and at the subsequent community meeting.  Both meetings were well-attended and clear in their concern with respect to this and other coming developments.

Unfortunately, there has been very little change and this proposal still has major deviations from the Vaughan Official Plan, the Kleinburg Area Specific Plan (as approved by the OMB Dec 2, 2013), the City of Vaughan “Where and How to Grow Report”, and the Kleinburg Heritage Conservation District Plan.

KARA has submitted comments to the planning department.  We are asking you once again to express your concern to our City Councillors by emailing them - council@vaughan.ca.   It is important to keep up our pressure on this development as it is the first in a long line.  It will set a precedent.

2.  Resolution on impacts of Development in Kleinburg Core

Because there are multiple development applications coming forward in a short time period that could change the current character and landscape of the Kleinburg core, our local councillor, Marilyn Iafrate, is putting forward to Council, a recommendation that any new development proposals for the Kleinburg core must be accompanied by urban design, transportation and servicing studies which take into account potential impacts, including servicing and traffic constraints in association with other proposed and planned developments in the area.

Please come out to the City of Vaughan Council Chambers, 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive, on Wednesday Sept 7, 1 pm to show your support at the Committee of the Whole Meeting and/or submit your comments to the city clerk via email -  clerks@vaughan.ca  Indicate your support for Marilyn Iafrate’s resolution on Development Review in the Kleinburg Core.

Pressure from Province to increase intensification

The province is working on a proposal that could increase intensification targets so that at least 60% of all new residential development will have to be built in already established communities.  The current target is 40% and earlier this year, York Region Councillors rejected a proposal from planning staff to increase that target to 45%.  They felt it would go too far in changing the Region’s traditional housing landscape.  If this goes through, it will effect a fundamental change in our communities – our children will be living in high rises.

Pierre Berton Heritage Centre

The Pierre Berton Heritage Centre will be located at the former Kleinburg United Church which will be renovated for community use. It will have a permanent wall exhibit that will offer visitors an engaging, interactive experience of our national story, driven and inspired by the work of one of Canada’s preeminent authors and media pioneers.

Please join us for a public information session to learn more about the plans for the Pierre Berton Heritage Centre, the renovations to the former Kleinburg United Church and the proposed community space.

Date & Time: Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
Location: Kleinburg Public School

What is happening in our area

  • A reminder again that there will be closures on Teston Road and Stegman’s Mill Road, from Ravendale Court to Pine Valley Drive, for a five (5) month period ending in November.

  • The design for the section of Major Mackenzie from Hwy 27 to Pine Valley is nearly complete.  There appear to be minimal changes to the entrance to Kleinburg (the entrance will be addressed by the Streetscape Project).  The roadway will be increasing to 6 lanes - however all widening appears to be on the south side of the current road.

  • The City is conducting a review to improve parking opportunities for the Kleinburg village core, and is assessing the removal of the No Parking area on the east side of Islington Avenue.  The existing No Parking zone extends from south of John Street to south of Treelawn Boulevard on the east side of Islington Avenue.  This No Parking zone has been in place since prior to 1996.
On Saturday, September 10, 2016 the annual Binder Twine Festival will be held on the streets of Kleinburg in the Village core.  Consequently, road closures will occur as follows:
  • Islington Avenue from the north entrance to Kleinburg Public School to John Street, from 8:00 AM through 8:00 PM
  • Nashville Road from the west side of the Doctorʼs House driveway to Islington Avenue, from 8:00 AM through 8:00 PM
  • Kellam Street from Islington Avenue to Napier Street from noon, Friday, September 9 through 8:00 PM Saturday, September 10.
The map below illustrates other parking restrictions necessary for the Festival to take place.  Please note that these are the same provisions re: closures/parking restrictions as in the previous several years.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tim Arnott, Binder Twine Chair, at 905-893-0794.
